Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated by all Muslims throughout the world to mark the end of the month of Ramadhan, a month of fasting and consecration. After 30 days of dawn-to-dusk fasting during Ramadan, the first three days of Hari Raya Aidilfitri are celebrated on a grand scale back in Malaysia.

All Malaysians welcome this as a time to enjoy good traditional Malay food. This year most of my Malay friends have gone back to Malaysia to celebrate  Hari Raya with their families and friends. I’m stuck in Italy!!! So I decided to celebrate my Hari Raya with the Italian neighbours. Who do not have a clue about what Hari Raya is.

I organized an Open House last Saturday for all my neighbours to enjoy and to experience how we Malaysian celebrate Hari Raya or Eid Fitri. I prepared everything on my own, rice cube, tomato rice, roti jala, veal rendang, kuah lontong, fried chicken, chicken curry and 4 types of cookies (london almond, biskut dahlia, almond cookies and coconut macaroon).  It took me 2 days to prepare the whole meal and 2 days just for the cookies.  Don’t get all excited and think ‘Oh my god she’s so diligent’ in the matter of fact I missed my family and friends back in Malaysia. Rather than dwell on it, might as well I move my skinny ass to organize this festive season with all the festivities food.

I wore my traditional dress, baju kurung, which I bought 2 years ago in Kuala Lumpur. It’s a sort of caftan paired with a skirt called sarong, cotton cream material with blue print on it and with beads and pearls.

It was a magical evening! My neighbours and all the other invited guests all complimented me for the food, the dress and the atmosphere that I contributed to create.
